The Hallowed Hallows: How doth ye measure up, dear movie?

Let me just begin by saying that I am one of those Harry Potter fans that sees the merit and enjoys the movies for what they are- films, with actors, producers and creative directors with a vision or execution that is likely somewhat and/or completely different from what I imagine in my own mind, in my own little world of Hogwarts, Diagon Alley, and the rest of it.

Thus, I highly enjoyed Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part II.  I've saved this quick review until I'd seen the film twice, and now that I have, I maintain a few things that I loved about Part I and II, and enjoy about the films in general.

In case it needs to be said, spoilers to follow, so don't read if you don't want to know.

To begin, I think we can all agree that it got a tad bit...trying to read on and on about months of camping.  When I envisioned the film, I was worried that they would prolong these months.  Luckily, the film(s) do a great job of making the story line a bit more exciting and fast paced.

I also highly enjoy how well the movies develop the visible relationship between Harry, Hermione and Ron.  While I truly feel and respect their friendship in the books, the filmmakers have taken the time to add in extra scenes that illustrate that which you only gain from reading the books in their entirety: the all encompassing love that the three share.  With little scenes throughout the films like the three laughing around the Gryffindor fire, teasing each other about writing during the summer, ad-libbing small comments here and there ("that was exciting!" "who are you and what have you done with Hermione?"), you can visualize them becoming like a family over those years at Hogwarts.

And I'll just say it: I'm a big fan of the Harry/Hermione dancing in the tent scene.  I thought it was adorable, reinforced their strong, but platonic, connection, and was incredibly heart felt.

While I don't like all of the changes they made to the film adaptation of book seven, in general, the choices felt sound.  They extended scenes I wish had been longer in the book- like the fight between Harry and Voldemort or Hermione and Ron venturing into the Chamber to gather basilisk fangs- and, in general, explained much of the premise: that love is what matters, and we should not fear death, as life without love is far worse.  Many of the scenes- though they lacked critical book components- were exactly as I imagined, such as Harry's moment of "death" where he ventures to "King's Cross", speaks with Dumbledore and sees what Voldemort is to become, and the battlefield of Hogwarts (so many spells, and giants and acromantulas galore! Perfect!)

And yet.

I do so wish that we could have flushed out all of the horcruxes in the sixth film so that the film audience knew that we were seeking a golden cup, that we could have heard the story of Dumbledore and Grindelwald so that we could have seen Dumbledore apologize to Harry in "King's Cross" and this all could have felt a bit more "whole circle."  The films don't even dive into the mistrust and anger Harry felt toward Dumbledore during the entire book- and it's so crucial to the student- Harry- coming into his own.

More importantly, I so wish Dudley, Pettigrew, Percy and Kreacher could have had their moments and scenes of redemption. Kreacher becomes a favorite in the middle of the Deathly Hallows, with the true understanding we gain of his disposition, and Pettigrew loosening his grip and then losing his own life because of remorse is SO KEY! And it wouldn't have taken much to show it all!

In part II, the return to the headmaster's office, with a wrap up with Dumbledore was sorely missed.  That moment of catharsis, of Harry greeting Dumbledore and sharing their common success is so- sorely missed. Why, in heaven's name, couldn't Harry have mended his wand with the Elder Wand as we know he does?

Finally, I have to note that Alan Rickman (Snape) ended up carrying this film franchise in so many ways.  He executed Snape's character, cold demeanor, unending love for Lily, and general persona SO WELL.  It was his scenes in the final film that had me most connected emotionally.

All that being said, I cried throughout about half of the film, so they must have conveyed the sentiments and feelings of the books well.  I can hardly believe that we HP fans don't have anything to set our sights on to look forward to, beyond Pottermore.

And lastly, the fourth movie is by far my least favorite.  If you watch the film, you'd think the only thing that happened that year was the Triwizard Tournament.  Granted it was important, but shiz happened between the second and third task, y'all!

I'll leave it there.  Your thoughts or comments on the eighth film, or any of them, really?

  1. Great review. I also prefer to take the movies at face value, because if you get into the sheer volume of content that has had to be left out over the years ... the movies just can't stand up. But despite all that, I still enjoy the movies. They're entertaining and heartfelt, and when I'm watching them, I don't really care about the parts that are left out. They are a fantastic supplement to the books, but cannot replace them.

  2. OMG I hated that he didn't repair his old wand with the Elder wand!! I think it was such an important symbol of Harry's character in the book and I'm really sad that they left it out. I was also disappointed with the final scene between Harry and Voldemort. Crumbling into ash did not seem final enough to me. I still need to see it a second time to further analyze :)

  3. Spot on!! I was disappointed with the kreacher/pettigrew/percy arcs. And I was SO disappointed they left out the part with Dudley. I love that part and thought it was poignant and important. Sometimes I don't understand why the things that get left out, get left out. If taken completely separately as a movie though, I thought it was well done and emotionally engaging. I also cried through a good half of it!

  5. The fourth book was my favorite book (and I'm reading it right now actually) and the movie definitely didn't reflect the book like I would have liked to see.

Anyway, the DH II movie didn't really do it for me. I mean I enjoyed it, but I think a big part of that enjoyment was because I was piecing together the things that happened in the book with the movie so I could grasp the full concept. I'd really like to know what it's like to watch these movies having never read the books. I also kept leaning over to my husband and saying, "That's not how it happened in the book!!!" I mean, how hard would it have been to have Snape die in the Shrieking Shack rather than some ridiculous non-existant boat house? lol. I also thought the death scene of Fred was AWFUL. Maybe I'm too picky when it comes to books I love being made into movies. ha ha

  6. I haven't seen the movie yet, but i LOVE spoilers so this was great. I 100% agree about the dance in the tent - so sweet, and about Kreacher. I loved that redemption, and am disappointed it (and the others) were left out of the film. I guess they can't do everything, but some of those seem so easy, and so important - why not include them?? Gah. Great review!

  7. This post was amazing. You are so right on so many counts. I really wish they would have gone a little deeper into the Dumbledore story and how hurt Harry felt. And Snape was AMAZING throughout all of the films.

I can't wait to see part 2 again!

  8. what a great review! i haven't seen the film yet (it's been a busy couple of weeks) but we are going to see it this weekend. i agree that you have to take it at face value, it's a MOVIE, not a book and they did do (for the most part) a great job of interpreting it into movies. that being said, my husband hasn't read all the books and he is somewhat lost. we are actually doing a harry potter marathon before we go see part II because he's admitted to me that he's a bit lost. and there are key parts that would help him to understand so much better if they just put some small things in the movies!

and i agree the 4th book and the 4th movie are both my favorites!

  9. Definitely love your review. I agree.. there was so much not explained, especially in the last movie, that really could have brought it full circle. My fiancé has read all but the last book.. I've be BEGGING him to read it! He saw the last two movies, and while he liked them, I think he would have appreciated it much more if those other story lines, such as with Grinelwald and Pettigrew and Kreacher.

Alas, thank you for reminding me, it's just a film! I always have the books to go back and reread (for the 10th time)!

  10. OMG I totally forgot about Dudley! Wow. You're right...that was completely missing and it would have been nice to have it!

Also, Alan Rickman needs an Oscar.

    Also, I cried. A lot.

  11. I love your commentary! The biggest thing that I thought was missing in the last two movies (mainly 7.1) was the fact that the wizardly world was in a state of war! People were dying left and right and the chaos was extending into the muggle world! The trio's search for horcruxes was DESPERATE because of the state of affairs at hand. Also, I understand why the writers chose to cut out a lot of the exposition, but I wish it was explored a bit more how they knew where to search for the horcruxes. The movie made it seem like Harry just wandered around until he "heard" the horcrux whistling.

But all in all, I really enjoyed the last movie~

  12. Looking forward to go watch it now, just trying to avoid the hundreds of kids as it's only just come out over here.
I haven't read the books but the first one is on my list, so I may end up doing so *sigh* more books for the list!
