such a dramatic title for such a wee little pup.
let's chat for a moment about the small ache that i carry around in my chest each day. that little part of me where i actually lose my oxygen, where the sadness presses against my lungs and hearts and shoots a resounding gong of lament when i see a certain four legged furry thing in a picture, on skype, or even another furry thing on the streets of cambodia.
the CERTAIN little furry thing is named boomer.
she is deeply loved not only be me but by countless others.
her wacky little ear, her fuzzy little belly, her relentless little growl at the doorbell.
each piece is a heavy and sharp pang.
and every time i ride my bike, i see countless furry reminders of my boomer. furry little animals, covered in invisible fleas, missing spots of fur, often with rib cages protruding through it all, noses scouring plastic bags and rubbish piles for remnants of rice.
endless pangs for man's best friend that are anything but in my new country. friends that are in fact rather guard dogs, things to be tolerated, but more often a nuisance, something that gets in the way of all moving vehicles on the roads, loud thumps when they aren't seen after the sun has set.
it's not that cambodians hate dogs- i haven't seen anyone maliciously attempt to seriously harm a dog. and it's not that it's a bad place with bad dog-hating people. it's just the pup reality here.
and the reality just is.
and to end on a happy note, a video of the boomster playing a favorite game called "slide on the floor" at my parent's house.
how deeply would you miss your furster if you moved to another country?
oh it must be so hard to be apart from boomer! i'm sure she misses you as well, but is having a wonderful time with your parents!
ReplyDeleteI miss my dog when I'm at WORK. I can only imagine how hard it is to be in a completely different country. :(
ReplyDeleteOh man, I can only imagine how hard it is to miss your dog so much! I am with @Jessica, I miss my dog when I'm at work! Boomer's going to be so glad when you get home!
ReplyDeleteI am so, so happy that we were able to bring our dogs with us to Spain. They are the most wonderful companions.
ReplyDeleteWhile some people here do regard dogs as pets, they are almost always not considered family members, like we consider our dogs to be. Dogs are largely outdoor animals in our village, and oftentimes are tied up, left to bark and bark and bark.
It breaks my heart too. Every time we take our dogs for a walk, it upsets me to see the other dogs who so viciously guard their property because they've never been properly socialized with dogs or humans. I know there is nothing I can do to change it, so I try not to dwell, but I go home and hug Wrigley and Zoe a little tighter.
I would definitely not do well with that. I'm sure he misses you so much too!
ReplyDeleteBoomboomboomerrrrr!!
ReplyDeleteI'm sure your pup misses you too, but just think of all the happy wiggles next time you see her! This makes me think of my sister, who won't even leave her dog for a DAY with someone else. If she travels, her dog comes with her. I don't have quite that level of attachment, but I certainly miss Sasha when we're away from him!
I can't even imagine how much I would miss my pups! Sean and I go out of town for the weekend and talk about how much we miss our dogs. Boomer is so precious too. And, I know it's hard. But, just think of all the puppy kisses you'll get next time you see her!
ReplyDeleteI'm so sorry. I was only away for 2.5 weeks, and I missed our kitties like crazy. I can't imagine your pain. I hope you continue to get more and more photos and videos to fill the void.
ReplyDeleteTo be honest, I miss Boomer too. Is it weird that your dog sometimes pops into my head and I wonder how he's doing?
ReplyDeleteAwww...Boomer! Just think of how glad she will be when you return! I would miss my pups (and my kitty) like crazy if I was gone for an extended period, so I can only imagine how hard it is. Hugs!
ReplyDeleteI am still so impressed that you were able to leave Boomer!! Our pup is our baby, and I miss him so much when we're on a trip...I can't even imagine what it would be like for us to be away from him for YEARS! It must be so hard to see those doggies who don't have love and good care, too:-(. Lots of <3 and support while you're missing Boomer!!
ReplyDeleteaw, thanks everybody. it's honestly one of the hardest parts about being here. give your pets a big ol' hug for those who can't tonight :)
