National Share Your Desk Week

Ok, so it's not REALLY National Share Your Desk Week, BUT I was sitting at my desk last week thinking how much I feel like my work space really tells a lot about my personality and approach to my work.

Above, you can see a full view of my work space.  Probably to no one's surprise, it's colorful. It's also full of momentos from my teaching days, a place for me to collect things that inspire me daily- like comments from my corps members, pictures and silly staff awards- as well as a small little place in the world where I get to embrace my love of all things office-related (pens, markers, tape, paper clips, staples, eep!)

Let's take quick tour, shall we?

Moving left to right, here is my basic view while I work. You can see my water glasses and bottles, my little calendar with adorable little pigs (PIGS!), the map showing all of my corps members' schools, notes from my awesome corps members, as well as a few pictures of my amazing former students (faces smudged out) and a sample writing from one of my former amazing pupils, where she wrote about her goals for the next 5 to 10 to 20 years. It gives me great focus and reminders for why I work as hard as I do.

Along the same line, last year my corps members decorated my desk for "Program Director Appreciation Day" and left me colorful, amazing, happy notes about our work together. I still read these when I'm feeling frustrated, down, or just feel like smiling.  Plus, they're BRIGHT. which is totally what I need my work space to be!

It's a somewhat crappy picture because of the sun, but you can see some of my organizing systems at play here. I'm HYPER organized at work, and have a place for everything (and everything in it's place.)  There are more momentos here, with notes from my OWN Program Director, more pictures of  my students and my work team, as well as my collection of business cards, and books for teachers.

Ah yes, my top drawer.  Underneath my favorite pens (which I have to keep in a drawer because pens mysteriously disappear from my desk,) I have a very organized set of staples, paper clips, pencils, and markers.

Next drawer down are note cards for when I visit classrooms, post its, and stationary.

Doesn't everyone have a food drawer at work?  Topher decided one day at Costco that we needed Sun Chips in our lives, so I have lots of remnants of those.  Lots of soup, popcorn, oatmeal, and little mini breakfast bars. Yum. What's in your food drawer?

So I'd like to put a little blog challenge out there to all my peeps- what does your work space look like? How does it reflect you and your working style or personality?

PS You are welcome to share your personal home desk too!

  1. I am so gonna do this. As soon as my office-mate leaves, so she doesn't think I'm a total freak for taking pictures of my desk. (c;

  2. Um, maybe I can write a post on my desk at home because my work desk is far less interesting than yours :) I love how much color you get to look at every day!

  3. I loved seeing this, Kate! I love all your motivational stuff all over your desk. I need to get me some.

In other news, would you mind please switching the red and orange felt pens in your drawer so they are fully in proper rainbow order before I have a stroke?

  5. Haha....I noticed that, too, Carrie! :) I always love looking at people's desks - they're such a peek into people's lives! Your desk is so bright and colorful and fun ... I should take a note out of your book and apply it to my own (drab!) cube!

  6. I've thought about sharing my desk for a while! I may have to jump on board with this.

I hide ALL my fave pens, they seem to walk off - and that's not cool. I'm weird about my pens.

  7. I try to stay away from food drawers but right now I have sunflower seeds. Food drawer = me gaining 20 pounds.

  8. Okay, this is really weird. I JUST wrote a post about my home desk (my work desk is very boring). Great minds think alike? :)

  9. I can't believe you have chips in your desk and didn't eat them yet. I would eat all of them. Before I even took my coat off in the AM. Anyway, I played along and shared my desk today too :)

  10. What a fun idea :) You are seriously super organized, I'm impressed! I have to admit, I have a love for all things office supply related too. I actually LIKED going back to school shopping in high school because it meant new notebooks, pens, pencils,, ohhhh the possibilities!

  12. Just found you on Man, Wife, and Dog blog and had to stop by. Great post and wonderful look into your work space. I love seeing all that color on your desk! I'm kind of allergic to anything resembling pink but I can still enjoy an organized desk with pretty colors when I see it.

I am a housewife...er, wannabe domestic engineer. My home desk is my office and 9 times out of ten it looks like a tornado blew through it. The hubs and I just moved into a 2 bedroom apartment and are converting second bedroom into an office. In only 4 days it already looks like we've been here for awhile. Oops.

My desk/area is usually comprised of this:

Bulletin board (with daily medication pinned to it so I actually remember)
    Pen cup
    Lotion
    Stapler
Can or cup of whatever I'm drinking
    Phone
    Laptop
And whatever else I can use to make a mess.

I'm organized...just in my own chaotic way. Haha.

  13. Um...can I just tell you that our desks are organization twins? Organization, color, encouraging notes, and pictures = a happy work space. Also, I can't get enough of Papermate Flair pens. Love!
