a very, very old photo that i think speaks to the topics of the day. |
today, i spent a happy twenty minutes diving into three particularly well-reasoned articles.
one almost makes me sick to my stomach with the injustice of the country that i call home.
10 reasons the rest of the world thinks the u.s. is nuts
one makes me think harder about why i am maybe a bit passive aggressive and have a tendency to freak out if topher tries to tell me i'm overreacting.
a message to women from a man: you are not "crazy"
and the third makes me consider a bit more deeply why i held out so long on using words like "bitch" and "slut" and why i should try even harder to go back to not using them, not even in moments of humor or levity.
the problem with slut-bashing
i highly recommend taking a quick read on your monday morning, and then coming back to tell me your thoughts.
Ach, that first article makes me really glad someone's yelling but also a little sad because it's not totally factual. I think everyone gets wrapped up a bit in hyperbole when they're angry and want to make a point. Hopefully it will get the discussion going a little louder though, because I am definitely guilty of being angry but not doing anything about it. Perhaps I should look into a more active role I could take -- any ideas?
ReplyDeleteI read that 2nd article a couple of months ago, and it really struck a chord. I get so worked up sometimes and people just say to me, "Come on, you know I was just kidding. Stop being such a girl and so crazy!" It irks me to no end, and I've since discovered that it's really their own insecurities that are leading them to manipulating me. It sucks though! Thanks for such great and thought provoking articles!!
ReplyDeleteI finally read these articles. I had this post saved for days. Thanks for linking to them. The first one has me outraged, obviously. Even though there are some misstatements I still think the article does a good job of pointing out the ridiculousness of this legislation. Sadly, I live in one of the impacted states.
ReplyDeleteMegan & Kelsey: I agree it was a bit... exaggerated, but I actually did click most of the links where she was trying to cite recent legislation. I think, despite that she took the wording of current proposed legislation and words of men elected/running and put them within in the spin/context of the article, her thoughts do have merits and definitely saddened me. Kelsey, what you said about being one of the affected states- all I could think was how grateful I was that I have the means to choose the state I live in and the luxury of perhaps being exempt from some crazy laws.
ReplyDeleteMina: I know! I think it's such a valid article!
