In my company I work for, we love setting goals. I mean, LOVE it. It gives us focus, a destination, and a way to measure progress, both qualitative and quantitative.
I've always been a goal setting person. I remember when I was seven, in second grade, and one Sunday I sat at my desk and set some summer and life goals for myself. My summer goals included reading as many Baby-Sitters Club and Sweet Valley Twins as possible (I think I set a number of 7 a week) and my life goals included going to Harvard or Stanford.
I didn't end up going to Harvard or Stanford, but I did leave Idaho for the east, and attended college in Washington, DC. I also remember distinctly that I ended up reading something like 100 books that summer. What can I say, I love to read?
In that similar vein, an amazing woman I work with shared the way she turned a work excel goal setting template into a workable document that set goals for the next year of her life. I definitely view this woman as a mentor and I was SO EXCITED because it seemed right up my alley and personality!
It's still a work in progress, but I wanted to share my current goals for the next year. Like my work compadre, I've centered them around growing in mind, body and spirit. To clarify, I've classified spiritual as something that makes me a happier, more complete person. Here are the goals I've come up with so far:
So, you can see that some of them are "easy" to track weekly and others are less quantitative and more qualitative in nature. You also might be saying "why the hell is she going to say one thing that makes her happy to be married to Chris? What does that have to do with her spirit?"
Well, I am often stressed, from work, life, etc. I often (read: almost always) take it out on Topher. I hate this about myself. I am so happy, so lucky to be married to this amazing man, and I want to remind him, and in turn, myself, WHY, every single day. I want a more complete spirit and for me, that comes from knowing and reminding myself of the joy that comes from everyday life, and marriage.
Have you ever set personal, life goals and tracked them in excel? Anyone? Anyone? Anybody inspired?
Hello, Pencils! It's me, your fellow TFA Bee, Octopus! I just wanted to inform you that this post made me laugh out loud. I just informed my mom today that the red "over budget" squares on my unbelievably detailed wedding money spreadsheet make me want to, quote, claw my own face off. Not because it's so terribly over budget, but because I did not meet the goal, and I HATE NOT MEETING THE GOAL. She suggested that I stop tracking it so carefully and I looked at her like she had grown another head. They truly have the TFA personality profile down to a science.
ReplyDeleteYes, but I don't track them in Excel. I usually do yearly goals every January. This year I'm adding goals for my 3_ year :) since my birthday is coming up soon. I think I'd like to make them more specific like yours though. I think I'd also like to set longer range goals too. Let us know about your progress.
ReplyDeleteI just looked at your spreadsheet more closely and laughed again at the goal "4 religions." I am like this with my New Year's Resolutions. I have fallen behind on my resolution to do one thing on my "Boston List" per month (cross-referenced, obvi, from my list entitled "Things to Do in Boston.") Because, obviously, how would I have fun if I weren't carefully keeping track of the fun I'm having and making a note of it in my spreadsheet?
ReplyDeleteFinally, I'd like to note that one of my New Year's Resolutions was "become a Weddingbee blogger." Thankfully, it has been crossed off with the note "DONE" and the date that I got the e-mail from Peng. Phew. Aaaaand I'm done commenting.
ReplyDeleteHaha, octopus you make me LAUGH! We are totally on the same wavelength about EVERYTHING.
ReplyDeleteTerri- that's great! I will keep you updated, I promise! :)
We are having a Quaker wedding! I can point you in the direction of some great books if you are looking for more information about the religion. I was raised Methodist (or, uh, going to church whenever my grandparents were in town...) and my fiance's family is Quaker, I'm definitely the "convert", but it's such a great community of people! Good luck on all your goals!
ReplyDeleteYes, catie, please give me suggestions! I have been interested in Quakerism for SO LONG!
ReplyDeleteFirst time commenting, I've followed your blog on Wedding Bee (one of my faves!) and now reading your Mrs. blog. Your spreadsheet has totally inspired me to create one of my own. My wedding is about a year away and I have some weight loss goals but also am planning on starting graduate school next year as well so this year is all about preparing for the big changes a comin! And I love that you'll be writing daily about what you love about your husband. I often take out my frustration on my fiance and it's the thing I dislike about myself the most, b/c he is so special to me you know? Anyways, thanks for the inspiration!
ReplyDeleteooh this is such a good idea. go you!
