My Childhood

My parents are in town for a week and they brought with them my childhood (one small fraction of the total childhood, I should say.)

Yes, my childhood can be summarized in mainly one word:

Books.  I read them constantly and wherever possible.

And now I'm reliving my eight year old self.  Topher asked me how they are and all I could say was:

I don't find myself connecting with the 13 year old characters as much as I did in my youth.

Shocking, I know.

  1. Oh man I was a big reader too! All of my old books are still at my parents' house because I don't have room for them at mine, but I totally can't wait to get my hands on them again!

  2. Ooooh girl! I would have bet $100 you were a BSC fanatic too. Who's your favorite? DON'T SAY KRISTY OR MARY-ANN. They're the worst.

  3. You're so lucky you still have them all, we had to get rid of all my Enid Blyton's during the numerous house moves when I was younger!
    Wish I'd kept them now

  4. Dude, I was such a reader. Still am, really. The BSC were so awesome. Did you know that the author of Sweet Valley High is publishing a new book? It takes place 10 years later. Elizabeth and Jessica hate each other. All kinds of drama. I can't WAIT to pick it up!

  6. oooohhh! books! that would be the one word i would use to describe myself as a kid, too. my parents just downsized their home and we got rid of a lot of mine, but i save all the BSC and American girl books...just couldn't let them go. :)

  7. Pretty sure I owned every one of those books at some point. Goosebumps and American Girls were THE best back in the day!

  10. OMG, Goosebumps!!! I loved to read as a kid, but I just can't get into it now. I'd much rather watch the movie version that read the book. I guess I just feel like I'm wasting so much time?

  11. I was a huge reader as a kid too- I spent so much time in libraries it was ridiculous. No wonder I'm such a loner now! Heehee. My favorite was "The Saddle Club" (the horse version of BSC). Unfortunately my mom is so unsentimental, and gets rid of everything. I bought a few Saddle Club and Fear Street Saga books a year or so ago - the Fear Street was still ok, but I couldn't take the Saddle Club. Guess my tastes have "matured" LOL

  13. Wow...my library looked eerily similar to yours. I was a HUGE BSC, American Girl and Sweet Valley Fan. I also LOVE Anne of Green Gables...like obsessively!

  14. Oh my gosh, you had everything! I had most of the American Girl ones, but totally borrowed all my BSC and Boxcar Children books! I also think my mom gave most of mine away a while ago.. oh well.

  17. I read a lot of the same books! In fact, I started recollecting my BSC collection last year and it's been fun. I started rereading, in hopes of blogging about them but then wedding planning got in the way. It's funny, they still act a lot older than 13 to me. I tend to "look up to them" in the same way. I guess that might never change.

I have all my books but since we haven't gotten around to getting bookcases in our house, they are sadly sitting in bags. Sigh. Soon!

    Thanks for sharing this!

  19. Haha, why on earth don't you connect with them? :)
I love that you have BSC books, a couple of years ago my BFF & I found a ton at a garage sale and bought them all.
Did you ever read 10 kids no pets? That was my all time favorite Ann M. Martin book.
Clearly I was a bit of a nerdy child.

  20. I will never forget coming down with chicken pox in 3rd grade and sending my dad to the bookstore with a list, and him coming back with every Sweet Valley Twin book that was out at that time. I was hooked and read my head off after that.

Did you hear Diablo Cody is writing and producing a Sweet Valley High movie? Best. News. EVER.

  21. Um, I'm currently re-reading the BSC Super Special "Snowbound." After that I shall read Baby-Sitters Island Adventure. Why yes, this is what I do when I'm totally stressed out and don't want to face real life. Who wouldn't want to go back to 13 year old problems??
