My name is Kate and I don't particularly crave shoes or purses.
I know it's a stereotype, but it's a stereotype I just don't fit. I don't find myself saying "wow' I really wish I had that new Dooney and Burke" or "I really need a new pair of Jimmy Choo's." For heaven's sake, I wore flip flops at my wedding. Partially because they were comfortable and partially because I'm not really a huge heels girl.
And yes, I prefer simple clutches and rely on gifted purses and bags to stockpile my variety. I don't usually color coordinate my purses (I do with my shoes, heh) and I don't really give a crap if someone doesn't like my old yellow purse from Aldo, circa 2005.
you're not the only one! I'm not into purses at all. It sometimes stresses me that I just really don't care to match my purse with anything, or spend money on them, but I basically buy a new $30 purse from Kohls or DSW every two years and use it until it falls apart.
ReplyDeleteYou are not odd. I've probably just gotten into shoes in my mid-late 20's, and I am sorta getting into purses now. That being said, I still have a hard time paying significant amounts of money for them. I just bought my first big girl/not $25 on the street (there's lots to buy on the street in NYC) purse in October, and I have to say that I love it. I felt guilty about it for days because it wasn't cheap. :( It does the change the game though: A woman started a whole conversation on the subway with me simply because of my purse!
ReplyDeleteIs it the high prices that make you uncomfortable, or are you just not interested in accessories? If it's the high prices, you're not alone. I am right there with you. You might also just not prioritize this, and that's A-Okay.
You might be? But at least you used "clutch" correctly. My "purse" is a small Timbuk2 bag (http://www.rei.com/product/797679) and I wouldn't have it any other way. I go practical & utilitarian before I go fancy, which is hard when I have to go somewhere fancy. And, um, I wore Chacos with my wedding suit. But only at the end of the wedding.
ReplyDeleteI'm with you. I love shoes but I wouldn't dare pay more than $50 for a pair and I'm the same with purses I like the idea of them and I can 'technically' afford them but why would I spend money on them.
ReplyDeleteP.S. I love flip flops and intend on wearing them at my reception. =)
I don't there's a thing wrong with you or "missing"! While I do love me some shoes and bags, I am more than happy with really nice, affordable ones.. I never really got the whole Coach thing, personally. Sure, they're nice, just not my thing.
ReplyDeleteAnd flip flops? I would wear those all year round if I could and not get frostbite on my toes. I mean.. they're so comfy and easy to just slip on. I'm with you there!
I am girly in that regard, but plenty of my friends aren't. I think it's nice to have a mix of people that care and don't care. So, nope, nothing wrong at all.
ReplyDeletei kind of missed the shoe and purse wagon. but now, at the ripe age of 34, i'm making more of an effort. however, practicality always wins out. that means very few heels and one splurge purse every few years. i know, i'm exciting.
ReplyDeleteI don't think you're weird or missing a gene. It's probably better! If you could see how much money i've spent over the last 10 years on shoes and purses, I could probably buy a car. How sad is that? I'm currently on a no-new-purses-until-30 kick (a year and four months!), and it's KILLING me!
ReplyDeleteI'm glad I'm not alone :)
ReplyDelete@Terri: It's not really the prices- it's just that I'd rather spend that 500 on something else. I just don't value a pair of boots more than a nice dinner with Chris, or some new books or even new jeans.
Yay flip flops! :)
You're not weird! I like bags, but I'm not a bag person. I appreciate a nice one, but that's exactly it- I buy ONE nice one, wear the hell out of it until it's dead, then buy a new one. You will never see me with tons & tons of purses. Now... shoes on the other hand...
ReplyDeleteHey, fashion isn't for everyone! I bet you have a lot more money to spend on things you do love! And you'll never have the overflowing pile of shoes issues that I finally just overcame (I just gave away half of my shoe collection).
ReplyDeleteI am so right there with you! (1st time commenter, regular reader.) I am not into purses or shoes at all. I have like 3 pair of shoes I regularly rotate through. I also love me some flip flops! My purse right now I think is from like 8 years ago. THE HORROR!
ReplyDeleteI used to be much nmore into shoes than I am now. I love cute shoes but haven't bought myself any new heels since I got my wedding shoes! And I'm always more into cute things rather than brands.
ReplyDeletePlus, the Behemoth sucks any extra money right out of us :)
There is a slight epilogue to this post. See: Xmas gift 2010.
ReplyDelete-Husband
Right there with ya! We can be weird together :)
ReplyDelete@ Morgan: It's not that I don't enjoy fashion and/or am not fashionable. I just don't obsess over Manolo's or Louis Vuitton. I have a sense of fashion- it's just different from other's in some ways.
ReplyDeleteYou are not alone. I carry a hand me down purse from Target that I love and own fewer shoes than my husband! I prefer to be comfortable :-)
ReplyDeleteOk...I feel like I'm somewhat inbetween here. I adore shoes, but not the super expensive ones like Jimmy Choo or Louboutins, etc. I buy a few pairs of shoes each year, but I spend about $80-$200 tops depending on what they are (higher end is for boots). And...its for the comfort to be honest! I used to buy "cheaper" brands of shoes (ones from Target or Payless), and I found myself crying in pain or having shoes that fell apart after a while. Now...some of the shoes that I bought at Nordstrom for about $100 are still going strong...3+ years now! I kind of view them as investments. However, I am not one to be buying sparkly strappy insanely high heels that could only be worn one time and with one outfit. They are fun...but I try to spend the big bucks on shoes that I'll wear until they die!
ReplyDelete@katie: I'm similar- I invest in a pair of black, brown and fun color flats every six months, spending between 50-60 on each pair. I do can't deny a quick payless sale though for cheap shoes every once in a while though :)
ReplyDeleteHA! But you're girly enough to quote Britney! :P <3
